Well, seeing as the sex education system is a colossal failure, writers such as Rebecca Perlow of the The Vital Voice, have taken it upon themselves to help dispel some of the misinformation regarding human sexuality. In her article of the same title, Perlow asks "Are you savvy about sex?" With the help of Karen Omvig, Vice President of Education for the St. Louis Region Planned Parenthood, the article debunks nine popular myths such as #7:
Gay couples always have a “man” and a “woman.”
I know what you're thinking: "But Leksi, someone's got to be the bitch in a relationship!" Well, that's not always the case. Alternating role-reversals with tops and bottoms can keep things interesting. Not everyone has vanilla sex. And even if you do, massive machismo is not always a deciding factor in sexual dominance. Sex is more about fantasy than the stereotypical gender roles we tirelessly play out every day. Sex can be a powerful escape from societal pressures... if you and your partner let it be.
My personal favorite is #6:
Condoms are “the man’s” responsibility.
In Judd Apatow's Knocked Up, Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) trusts Seth Rogen's character to get his happy hat on while drunk off his ass, and we all know what happens (even if you've never seen the movie: see title). Live by the US Coast Guard's motto: Semper Paratus (Always Prepared). Dependency works for kiddies and the mentally challenged. What's your excuse?
You can find all nine popular sexual misconceptions on The Vital Voice web site. Granted, it's mostly a dry read, but you can e-mail Perlow your more advanced questions if you feel you've graduated beyond novice. The Vital Voice is a "diverse and independent bi-monthly regional newspaper serving St. Louis and Missouri, as well as Southern Illinois."
I've included links to various hardcore sex education films spanning a wide range of pleasures. Enjoy!
