AVN 2008 Winners: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Adult Video News (AVN) Awards Show, now part of the Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), was this Saturday evening in Vegas. Maybe you care, maybe you don't. But every year I discover new and interesting porn as a result of both the AVN nominations and the award winners. Consumers are inundated with vastly numerous adult film choices, and the number keeps growing each year -- so picking a title out of a selection of tens of thousands can be daunting. It can often feel much like finding yourself in the cereal aisle of a major grocer, except everything looks tantalizing and the options are a thousand fold. Since most of us don't have unlimited budgets, nor unlimited knowledge of each film made, I find the AVN awards to be a helpful guide for finding new adult series, actors, directors and web sites.
This year was probably the biggest year for the 25th Annual AVN Awards. Dave Navarro along with Artie Lang (Howard Stern Show) and a bevy of press people were present both before and during the awards show. Jenna Jameson came with her UFC fighting champion/coach boyfriend, Tito Ortiz. Jameson was met with boos as she told the audience:
I really want to be honest for a second. I'll never spread my legs in this industry ever again.
This isn't actually real news as Ms. Jameson announced her retirement from porn at the end of the summer. But I believe this was one of those pop meltdown moments that will go down in porn history. Jenna had her implants removed this summer and she's a physical wreck for pete's sake -- Tito needs to feed her! I don't see how she could do porn at this point in her life anyway. Would I love to see her get well and come back to the industry? Sure! But she's better off focusing on her personal issues, which appear numerous.
Hostess Tera Patrick looked stunning in a body-hugging pink gown. Tera definitely did not look fat, contrary to rumors from her G4TV appearance. She's always been a curvy gal and that is a big part of her sex appeal. Her husband, Evan Seinfeld (AKA Spyder Jonez) has lost a ton of weight. They look cute exiting the show together,
holding hands.
As far as the film awards, there were a few surprises. I was not at all astonished to see Sex Z Picture's Upload win in so many categories, simply because that was the expectation based on reviews and the sheer massiveness of this 4-disc film of epic budget and talent proportions. However, I heard that Fashionistas Safado Berlin was not nearly as good as the original Fashionistas, yet they also took home a bunch of AVNs. The Fashionistas show was part of the awards ceremony, with a political theme that featured an FBI raid, and of course, a lot of acrobatics in fetish wear.
It came as no surprise that teen sensation, Sasha Grey, won the title of Female Performer of the Year as well as an award for Best Oral Sex Scene for her role in Digital Playground's Babysitters.
I don't know if they planned it, but Stormy and Jenna both wore long body-hugging, leopard print dresses that exposed their shoulders. Stormy was the first recipient of The Jenna Jameson Crossover Star of the Year award, named so because Ms. Jameson was the Crossover star award recipient for both 2006 and 2007, and let's face it, she's probably the most well known name outside of porn. If they didn't rename the award they'd have to keep giving it to her. Upon receiving the award, Stormy quipped,
I love you Jenna, but I'm going to spread my legs a little longer.
Nice! The audience ate it up and perhaps some tensions were dispelled.
Adult veteran Evan Stone took home the Male Performer of the Year award. He took full advantage of the situation posing with some of my favorite female performers (Shay Jordan, Daisy Marie and Carmen Luvana) in gratuitous Evan-style. I love his leather hot pants and boots. Leave it to Evan to bring some male sexiness back to the AVNs.
After the show there were many after parties, chock-full of porn stars and minor celebrities. Criss Angel (Mind Freak) managed to poss with a dozen different performers during the Wicked LAX party and I can't decide in which he looked the least creepy. He has this half-beard thing going and his hat is covering those bloodshot eyes as he glares from behind its rim. Sunny Leone is absolutely stunning in her jeweled necklace and tight-bodiced black-laced dress. Sadly she did not take home any AVN awards this year.
Finally, Unsung Starlet of the Year went to busty knock-out, Gianna. Now, I have no clue how she's supposedly "unsung" as I've seen her on over two dozen box covers this year alone, but okay. A girl with natural pillow tits and a pretty face does not get ignored in this industry. I love Gianna's breasts and sultry looks, but when I think "unsung" I think of the slightly less noticeable talent such as Gia Paloma who goes that extra mile to make up for any lack of huge natural endowment.
I was mostly pleased with the winners, though I'm very glad AVN is getting rid of the video/film distinction as it is gratuitous given the quality of video today. It should have been removed before this year as it just causes a lot of okay films to get nods where nods are not deserved. For the most part, everyone looked Oscar-worthy on the red carpet, on stage and partying the night away. We have a lot to look forward to in the coming year while we try to catch up on some award-winning porn viewing.
